ABOUT OMAHA FORUS

How do I use your pantry or clothing closet?

During your visit at Omaha ForUs, please let a staff member know that you are interested in accessing our clothing closet and/or pantry. These are both open for utilization on specific days and times:

Tuesday through Thursday: 1 p.m. - 7 p.m.

Friday and Saturday: 10 a.m. - 2 p.m.

No appointment is needed! We recommend planning on one hour for your visit to utilize these services. Both our pantry and clothing closet are self-serve and donation based. No one is turned away due to lack of funds.

Do I have to register for events?

Many events on our calendar do require registration in advance. Go to the individual event pages for registration information. Some events, like teen drop-in hours, do not require registration.

Do parents/caregivers need to wait in the building during youth programming?

Parents/caregivers do not have wait in the Omaha ForUs building during youth programming, but you are more than welcome to! We will host you in a separate area.

Is Omaha ForUs hiring?

Please view the careers section on our about page for job postings and updates.

If I’m not part of the LGBTQ+ community, can I still visit Omaha ForUs?

Yes. While Omaha ForUs is specifically focused on LGBTQ+ individuals and families, any non-LGBTQ+ person is welcome to visit our center.

Some of our program offerings are open and available to the entire community. For example, our Parents & Caregivers of LGBTQ+ Individuals Support Group is specifically designed with non-queer folks in mind.

Please remember this is first and foremost an LGBTQ+ focused space. Any disruption to this effort will result in an invitation to leave. Please read and follow our code of conduct.

We ask non-LGBTQ+ individuals or small groups to be mindful of touring the center during peak times to try to eliminate the "fishbowl effect" for our community members who are sometimes navigating trauma and challenging personal circumstances.

Understanding our LGBTQ+ community

Do LGBTQ+ people need specialized care?

Having access to the care LGBTQ+ people need is not “special” care — it’s just care. Most LGBTQ+ people don’t have access to knowledgeable providers or affirming care. Providers are not required to receive training or education in caring for non-heterosexual, non-cisgender identities and/or bodies. This results in poor health outcomes. We can change all of that with an LGBTQ+ center that professionalizes and operationalizes LGBTQ+ care.

How can I learn more about the needs of the Midwestern LGBTQ+ community?

Unfortunately, little data exists on LGBTQ+ experiences in the Midwest. However, there is some local data for Nebraska. Additionally, statistically representative data from national research efforts can provide insight into the successes and challenges of LGBTQ+ communities.

How does Omaha ForUs differ from Opportunity Campus?

Opportunity Campus is supported and directed by Black and Pink National. It is not affiliated with Omaha ForUs. We consider Black and Pink a valuable Omaha-based national resource for system-impacted LGBTQ+ populations.

Opportunity Campus is a residential and community place of safety, healing, and transformation for system-impacted LGBTQ+ youth, young adults, and their families.

Black and Pink’s work enables Omaha ForUs to to serve additional LGBTQ+ intersectional communities in need of support.
